Are You Wearing Your Life Vest?

20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;  Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Isaiah 5:20

Have you ever watched a speed boat race?  If you have watched even a news clip about a race, you can’t help but notice that it wouldn’t take much for those boats to become airborne and fly.  Most of the time, there is more air under those boats than water.  With the combination of a boat’s speed and the powerful force of water (remember Hurricane Ike?), anything is possible.

There was an incident where a racer turned his boat just enough to strike a wave the wrong way.  The boat went airborne, spinning out of control.  The force of the spinning boat ejected the racer into the water.  He was thrown with such force that he found himself deep in the water, and disoriented.  He wasn’t able to determine which way was up.

He finally was able to compose himself enough to simply relax.  He knew he was wearing a life vest, and its buoyancy would carry him upward if he wouldn’t fight it.

It seems like in the world today it is easy to be “thrown deep” and confused about what is going on.  The things that we have always called wrong, so many people believe are right; and those things we believe are right, many call wrong.  Things that have always been covered in darkness are shown in the light and celebrated.  The “speed” at which we live and the issues we are bombarded with in this information age leave us disoriented and confused.  We struggle to make sense out of anything.  We don’t know which way is up.

Just like that racer, sometimes we just need to relax and remember we are wearing our “life vest” – Jesus!  With Jesus, we know the difference between right and wrong, between good and evil.  With Jesus, the Light exposes the things hidden by the darkness.

And we can trust Jesus to always be there to pull us to the surface.  But we have to allow Him to be with us.  This world will “drown” us if we allow it take control of our lives.  But with Jesus by our side, we will taste the “sweet” things in this life God has for us.

So as you “race” through life, don’t forget to put on your “life vest.”
