How Long Has It Been Since You Have Been Free?

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

~Matthew 11:28-30

We live in a great nation.  We may not agree with the politics in place, but America is a great and blessed nation.  One of those great blessings is our freedom.  Yet, despite our constitutional freedom, too many of us are not really “free.”  We find ourselves chained to a job, a relationship, or something we have done in the past.  We live under the bondage of guilt, shame, and judgement.  We feel trapped in our situations and our addictions.  We can’t find our way out.  We can’t find our freedom.

But Jesus says if we will come to Him, He will give us rest.  The burdens of this world are meant to be given to Him, and He will carry that heavy load.  So how long has it been since you have been free?  Well, that’s too long!

Are you like that man walking down that hard road?

Bent over in his back from carrying a heavy load,

Chained up by the cares of the world we all see.

How long has it been since you have been free?

She’s trying to pull herself up out of that hole.

The shame she carries from the things she stole.

Is there something you’ve done others still see?

How long has it been since you have been free?

The couple struggled to make it through the day.

Feeling judged by things the neighbors would say.

Feeling accusations from what others think they see?

How long has it been since you have been free?

Jesus says, “Come to me, for my burdens are light.

My yoke is easy; bringing rest both day and night

I always know what my plans for you shall be.

And if you will come to Me, I will make you free.”
